Water Scarcity in Gaza Worsens as Residents Struggle to Meet Daily Needs
In Khan Younis in southern Gaza, 28-year-old Shaima Abu Jamos stands in front of a water tank and waits for assistance to fill her containers, a routine that has become part of her everyday life.
“I stand for long hours in line and cannot fill water on my own, so I rely on others to secure my daily needs,” Abu Jamos, who is visually impaired, told a media outlet.
The water situation in Gaza has continued to deteriorate amid extensive damage to infrastructure during Israel’s two-year war, which has severely affected water systems and reduced available sources. At the same time, maintenance and repair efforts have reportedly been limited.
Restrictions on the entry of equipment and essential supplies have further widened the gap between demand and supply, making access to clean water increasingly difficult, particularly as displacement rises and humanitarian conditions worsen.
The crisis is unfolding alongside broader shortages of fuel and electricity, which are also disrupting essential services such as healthcare and water distribution across the territory.
