Provided by AGPDuring the Commission’s daily briefing in Brussels, spokesperson Markus Lammert confirmed that the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, working alongside Sweden’s Justice Ministry, had contacted Afghanistan’s “de facto authorities” regarding the possibility of arranging a meeting in the Belgian capital.
"I can confirm that DG Home, together with the Swedish Ministry of Justice, has sent a letter to the de facto authorities in Afghanistan to inquire about the availability for a meeting at a technical level here in Brussels," Lammert said.
He noted that the proposed discussions would build on an earlier technical meeting that took place in Afghanistan in January.
According to Lammert, the initiative traces back to a request made in October last year by 20 EU member states and countries associated with the Schengen Area, which asked the European Commission to coordinate engagement with Afghan authorities concerning migrant returns.
The spokesperson said the talks are mainly intended to address the return of individuals who “have no right to stay in the union” and whom member states classify as security concerns.
"So this is mainly about persons who pose a security threat," he said.
