Provided by AGPWHO representative Reinhilde Van de Weerdt said the estimates highlight the long-term humanitarian and medical consequences of the conflict, as well as the severe strain placed on Gaza’s healthcare and rehabilitation systems.
According to the organization, the number of life-changing injuries has continued to rise since its previous assessment in September 2025, with nearly 5,000 additional severe cases documented. Reports indicate that almost half of those injuries occurred after a ceasefire announcement in October 2025.
WHO data cited by officials shows that serious limb injuries make up the largest category of severe trauma cases, totaling more than 22,000. Other major injuries reportedly include thousands of amputations, burns, spinal cord trauma, and traumatic brain injuries.
The organization estimates that more than 50,000 injured individuals now require long-term rehabilitation and specialized medical support.
Officials also said that thousands of patients have registered for reconstructive and rehabilitation treatment in recent months, with many requiring additional surgeries because of the complexity of their injuries.
Despite the growing demand, WHO said rehabilitation capacity inside Gaza remains extremely limited. According to the organization, no rehabilitation facility is currently fully operational, while hundreds of patients remain on waiting lists for specialized care.
The agency further warned that shortages of medical and rehabilitation equipment continue to hamper treatment efforts. Officials said shipments containing wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and rehabilitation supplies are still awaiting clearance, while little or no new rehabilitation equipment has entered Gaza over the past two years.
