Provided by AGPThe warship HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer that had been operating in the eastern Mediterranean close to Cyprus, is expected to position itself in the region ahead of any future deployment linked to the planned maritime mission, according to reports citing British defense officials.
The initiative, jointly supported by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, is intended to maintain secure navigation routes through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
"We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz," the spokesperson said.
"The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow."
Tensions across the region have intensified since the United States and Israel carried out strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting Israel and several US partners in the Gulf region, alongside the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire later came into effect on April 8 through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, though negotiations held in Islamabad did not result in a permanent settlement. Former US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the truce without announcing a deadline, leaving diplomatic channels open for further discussions.
Reports also noted that the United States has maintained a naval blockade against Iranian maritime activity in the area since April 13.
Trump announced Tuesday that the US military will temporarily pause "Project Freedom" to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and said the American blockade will remain "in full force and effect."
