UK Deploys Warship to Mideast Amid Strait of Hormuz Security Planning
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is sending a Royal Navy destroyer to the Middle East in preparation for a potential multinational operation aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to defense officials.
The deployment involves the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon, which had previously been stationed in the eastern Mediterranean near Cyprus. The ship will be positioned in the region in advance and placed on standby for possible participation in a UK- and France-led maritime mission once conditions allow.
British defense officials described the move as precautionary planning intended to ensure readiness for a coalition effort focused on safeguarding international maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
The proposed initiative is backed by UK leadership and French President Emmanuel Macron, with the stated objective of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
The deployment comes amid heightened regional tensions following military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran earlier in the year, which contributed to retaliation across the region and disruptions in maritime activity.
Although a ceasefire was later established through mediation efforts, follow-up negotiations did not produce a long-term settlement, and security conditions in the region remain unstable.
