Merz Reiterates Germany’s Backing for Ukraine’s EU Accession Path

(MENAFN) Germany has reiterated its strong support for Ukraine’s ambition to join the European Union, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz restating Berlin’s position during talks held in Berlin with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

At a joint press briefing, Merz acknowledged the long road ahead for Ukraine’s accession, stating, “Germany supports this goal, even though we both know that we cannot fully achieve it in the short term,” according to the chancellor.

He underlined that Ukraine’s membership in the EU “would be a strategically important step toward greater security and prosperity in Europe.”

Merz also urged Ukraine to maintain momentum on domestic reforms, particularly in governance and anti-corruption efforts. He emphasized that Kyiv should intensify its work in these areas, stressing that continued progress brings the country closer to European integration and serves the shared interests of both Ukraine and the wider continent. In his words, he encouraged Ukraine “to push ahead even more vigorously with reforms in the country, particularly in areas such as the fight against corruption and the rule of law. Because the effort is worth it. Every further step in this direction is a step closer to Europe. And I want to emphasize this particularly in the mutual interest of Europe and Ukraine.”

Alongside political support, Germany and Ukraine are expanding their military cooperation following agreements reached during the first bilateral government consultations held in Berlin under Merz and Zelenskyy. As part of this development, both sides agreed to elevate their relationship to what Merz described as a “strategic partnership.”

The two countries also agreed on a broader package of defense cooperation measures. These include increased support in air defense systems, long-range weaponry, drone technology, and artillery ammunition, according to official statements.

In addition, cooperation will extend to the sharing of digital battlefield data, aimed at advancing the development of modern weapons systems.

“What we are doing in this cooperation is not only beneficial for Ukraine’s defense. It is also of particular benefit to us, for our security,” Merz said, highlighting that the collaboration strengthens both Ukrainian defense capabilities and Germany’s own security interests.
