Severe Weather Disrupts Flights in Moscow
Airport operations data reveals 271 inbound and outbound flights facing delays, with an additional 42 flights scrapped entirely. The chaos spans Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports as the capital battles extreme snowfall.
Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency acknowledged the mounting challenges but emphasized that operations have not ground to a halt. Moscow airports are maintaining limited functionality, continuing to process arrivals and departures despite deteriorating conditions, the agency reported.
Authorities had sounded the alarm earlier this week. Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry issued urgent warnings about hazardous conditions persisting through January 10, including intense snowfall, powerful wind gusts hitting 18 meters per second, treacherous ice, and mounting snowdrifts blanketing Moscow roadways.
The Hydrometeorological Center of Russia has escalated its alert status, declaring an orange-level weather warning for the metropolitan area—signaling significant danger and advising residents to exercise extreme caution.
