Arab League condemns Israeli raid on UNRWA headquarters
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit described the raid as indicative of ongoing attempts to undermine UNRWA’s presence and functions in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Gamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the secretary-general, said that Israeli allegations against the agency “lack any legal or logical foundation,” emphasizing that the action “forms part of a systematic and sustained effort to terminate UNRWA’s presence and operations.” He urged the international community “to intervene in an effective and decisive manner to bring an end to this campaign targeting the Agency.”
UNRWA provides “vital health, education, and employment services to millions of Palestinian refugees across its five fields of operation,” Roshdy added.
UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini reported that Israeli police, accompanied by municipal officials, forcibly entered the compound in East Jerusalem on Monday, removing the UN flag and raising the Israeli flag.
Established over 70 years ago by the UN General Assembly, UNRWA was created to assist Palestinians displaced from their land. The agency has faced severe financial difficulties after Israel restricted its operations and launched a defamation campaign, alleging staff involvement in the October 7, 2023 attacks, which forced UNRWA personnel to vacate the compound earlier this year.
