UK Navy requests more funding to maintain Atlantic edge over Russia

(MENAFN) The British Royal Navy is calling for greater investment and closer collaboration with domestic arms manufacturers to maintain its “advantage” in the Atlantic amid rising Russian activity, First Sea Lord Gen. Gwyn Jenkins said at the Sea Power Conference on Monday.

Jenkins warned that the UK’s maritime edge, held since World War II, is under pressure as global competitors expand capabilities. “The advantage that we have enjoyed in the Atlantic since the end of the Second World War is at risk. We are holding on, but not by much,” he said.

He cited a “30% increase in Russian incursion in our waters” over the past two years as evidence of the growing threat. To respond, the Royal Navy is partnering with arms manufacturers to develop advanced submarine-detection technology, with contracts expected next year.

Russia has criticized such claims, arguing that Western governments exaggerate threats to justify defense spending and distract from domestic challenges.

Jenkins’ remarks come after UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced £26 billion ($34.4 billion) in tax hikes last month, partially aimed at funding increased defense expenditures.
