UN states Israeli attacks are jeopardizing fragile Gaza ceasefire

(MENAFN) A senior UN humanitarian coordinator for the Middle East warned that recent Israeli strikes in densely populated parts of Gaza are endangering the already delicate ceasefire, stressing that all sides must show restraint and honor the terms of the truce, as stated by reports.

During a briefing to the UN Security Council, he noted that the airstrikes have resulted in “numerous casualties and significant destruction,” while also acknowledging that attacks targeting Israeli forces inside Gaza have caused deaths. He emphasized, “This violence is jeopardizing the fragile ceasefire. I urge all parties to exercise restraint and fulfill their commitments under the agreement.”

He added that with the truce still generally holding, the UN has intensified its work to expand humanitarian operations, describing efforts to reach civilians wherever possible. “With the ceasefire largely holding, the United Nations has redoubled efforts to mobilize and scale up humanitarian assistance—seizing the moment to reach the population wherever they are,” he said.

The official cautioned that this progress could easily unravel. “We must not risk a reversal,” he warned, urging stronger global cooperation to reinforce the ceasefire and move toward “a more secure and just future for all.”

Although some staple foods have become more available and slightly more affordable, he explained that the overall humanitarian situation “remains bleak.” He noted that while basic goods have improved, “key protein sources, such as chicken, meat, and eggs, remain out of reach for many families.”

He also highlighted ongoing shortages of essential shelter materials, including tents and blankets, according to reports.
