Meta Concealed Research Showing Facebook’s Effects on Youth
The company’s private communications were made public on Friday as part of a long-standing, widely covered lawsuit initiated by US school districts against several social media corporations.
The case contends that these platforms have contributed to mental health problems and addictive behaviors among children and teenagers.
Documents reveal that in a 2020 study, Meta asked participants to refrain from using Facebook for a certain period, comparing their experiences with a control group that maintained regular usage.
“To Meta’s disappointment, pilot tests of the deactivation study confirmed that ‘people who stopped using Facebook for a week reported lower feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and social comparison,’” the filings claim.
Even with evidence linking Facebook usage to negative mental health outcomes, the documents assert that “Meta lied to Congress about what it knew.”
The social media conglomerate has faced growing scrutiny in the United States in recent months.
In October, Meta announced plans to introduce additional protections for its “teen accounts,” enabling parents to disable their children’s interactions with the company’s AI chatbots, after prior disclosures revealed that the bots could engage minors in romantic or sensual exchanges.
