Portugal confirms twenty-nine mpox cases in past three months

(MENAFN) Portuguese health authorities have confirmed 29 cases of mpox over the past three months, with 10 cases in August, three in September, and 16 in October, according to reports.

“In recent weeks, an increase in the number of cases has been observed, suggesting a possible intensification of transmission, although there is still no evidence of a new epidemic peak,” the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) and the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA) said in a statement.

Officials noted that October’s figures exceeded the monthly average of roughly 11 cases. However, they cautioned that understanding the significance of this rise will depend on laboratory confirmations and the trend of reported cases in the coming weeks.

A recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted that all known strains of the mpox virus are still circulating, raising the possibility of ongoing community transmission if outbreaks are not swiftly controlled. The report also noted that a newly identified strain, clade Ib, has now spread beyond Africa.
