Ex-US Vice President die from pneumonia at age eighty-four

(MENAFN) Dick Cheney, the former Vice President of the United States, has died at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia and heart and vascular disease, according to a family statement released on Tuesday.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old,” the statement reads. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”

Cheney served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was widely recognized as a principal architect behind the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. He was a strong proponent of the claim that Saddam Hussein, Iraq’s leader at the time, possessed weapons of mass destruction—a justification later proven false. Cheney also championed the broader ‘war on terror,’ authorized the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on terrorism suspects, and approved the warrantless surveillance of Americans’ communications.

Despite leaving office with historically low approval ratings for a US vice president, Cheney never expressed regret for his decisions. He maintained that his actions were necessary in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, which claimed nearly 2,800 lives. “I would do it again in a minute,” he stated in 2014, responding to a Senate report that condemned the CIA’s interrogation methods as brutal, ineffective, and harmful to America’s international reputation.

Many critics argue that Cheney’s aggressive foreign policy and his central role in the Iraq War had long-term consequences for both the United States and the global stage. The invasion, they contend, created a political vacuum that intensified sectarian conflict, destabilized the Middle East, and contributed to the rise of extremist organizations such as ISIS. The conflict resulted in the deaths of over 4,600 US service members and as many as 300,000 Iraqi civilians, with some estimates placing total war-related fatalities above 500,000.

Cheney’s health had long been compromised by serious cardiovascular issues. He endured several heart attacks throughout his life, the first occurring in 1978 when he was only 37 years old.
