Poland Vows to Down Any Objects Entering Its Airspace
"We will take the decision to shoot down any flying object when it violates our territory and flies over Poland – there is absolutely no discussion about it," Tusk said during a news conference in Warsaw.
Earlier this month, Polish officials confirmed that Russian drones had breached the country's airspace, leading NATO to bolster defense measures along its eastern border. Tusk disclosed that Polish and NATO aircraft had intercepted and downed at least three of the Russian drones in Polish airspace.
Russia has denied that the airspace violations were intentional. Following Poland’s claims, similar incidents were reported by both Romania and Estonia.
“This is the first time Russian drones have been shot down on NATO territory, and this alters the political landscape,” Tusk remarked. He pointed out that Poland had invoked NATO’s Article 4, a clause that allows members to consult on any matter that could threaten the security of the alliance.
“I also need to be absolutely certain... that all allies will treat this in exactly the same way as we do,” Tusk added.
Despite the heightened tensions, Tusk urged restraint in handling unclear situations. "When dealing with situations that aren’t fully clear – such as the recent flight of Russian fighter jets over the Petrobaltic platform – but without any violation, as these aren’t our territorial waters – we really need to think twice before deciding on actions that could trigger an acute phase of conflict,” he said.
